Join us for the 2019 faculty speaker event!  Professor Julie K. Norem, Margaret Hamm Professor of Psychology will speak on The Benefits of Negative Affect. Professor Norem's research focuses on personality psychology and optimism and pessimism. She studies the strategies people use to pursue their goals and pioneered the theory of "defensive pessimism" -- a strategy in which people envision the worst outcomes and prepare accordingly. This is outlined in her book, The Positive Power of Negative Thinking.
