Day to Make a Difference
The Wellesley College Alumnae Association encourages local clubs to celebrate the opening of Wellesley College in September 1875, by providing service back to the community. In that spirit, the Wellesley Club of Houston (WCOH) is supporting the Tahirih Justice Center, a national non-profit dedicated to protecting immigrant women and girls fleeing violence. Tahirih Justice Center is the only national, multi-city organization providing a portfolio of direct legal services, advocacy, and education to protect and empower immigrant women and girls fleeing violence.
Tahirih Justice Center
Inspired by the principles of Baha'i Faith, and named after a prominent 19th century Persian poet, theologian and extraordinary leader who inspired women to reject their oppressed status, Tahirih Justice Center is committed to creating a world where all women and girls enjoy equality. Since 1997, the organization has assisted nearly 19,000 women and children seeking protection from gender-based human rights abuses such as rape, female genital mutilation and cutting, domestic violence, human trafficking, and forced marriage.
In October 2016, Tahirih's Houston office will hold a Community Education Event with the goal of reinforcing healthy relationships and healthy dynamics for children, youth, and young adults, and empowering their voices to break cycles of violence. Approximately 100 youths are expected to attend the workshop. For its Day to Make a Difference, WCOH will donate a "goody bag" for each youth attending Tahirih's Community Event.
